The Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education is named after the town of Reggio Emilia in the Emilia Romagna province of northern Italy. In Reggio Emilia, publicly funded schools provide education for children from birth to six years. These schools have been described as among the best in the world. Reggio Emilia places a strong emphasis on children engaging in extended in-depth investigations, these are performed with both teachers and children and are based on the child’s interests. Through doing this, children are using their abilities to represent their thoughts, feelings and observations with graphic skills such as drawing, painting and story writing. In Reggio Emilia-inspired schools, teachers place great emphasis on using materials and activities that provoke investigation and group learning.
